If you could only take a handful of skincare products to a desert island, which ones would you pick? I think I speak on behalf of all beauty obsessives when I say that this is the most difficult question to answer. I have so many different skincare items that do *kind of* but not *exactly* the same thing as each other – which is my excuse to hoard multiple products in the same category. Here are my Holy Grail skincare picks that I just can’t live without.
I’ve been as ruthless as possible here, only sharing the products I couldn’t live without on a desert island . For some categories, I have a few holy grail products – but I’ve only shared the one that I think is the most versatile and would repurchase first if everything vanished overnight.
Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel // Suitable for every skin type, this is very much a cult favourite in the beauty community. It cleanses the skin without stripping it of moisture, leaving your skin hydrated but with no greasy residue. My skin always looks healthy and glowy after I use it. This can be used for both a first and second cleanse, which is why I have chosen this as my one cleanser to take to a desert island. However, in my usual skincare routine, I only use it as a second cleanse. For my first cleanse I usually use one of *The 3 Best Cleansers for Removing Makeup* <– insert link to blogpost.
La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo+ // As I have oily, acne-prone skin, I need a moisturiser that will help control shine. With acne-fighting ingredients such as niacinamide and salicylic acid, it clears up and prevents blemishes. Many mattifying or acne-preventing moisturisers can strip your skin, leaving it dry and sensitive – but not Effaclar Duo+. This gel moisturiser is lightweight on the skin, but still feels hydrating and nourishing.
Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment // Super hydrating and nourishing, this eye cream plumps up my under-eye area making me look more awake and healthy. This is great if your under-eyes are a little on the drier side, but isn’t too heavy for a more normal skin type too. I’d say my under-eye area is normal, and I can use this both day and night – I just use a very thin layer when applying in the morning. My makeup sits perfectly on top without any slipping or sliding.
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion // This is a miracle worker for my skin. It’s the only product that I have used at night and there is a noticeable improvement in my skin by the morning. It evens out my skin tone, gets rid of any under the skin bumps and makes my skin look bright and glowy. Retinoids and retinols can sometimes leave your skin flakey and sensitive, but I’ve had absolutely no issues with this. I honestly couldn’t live without this now.
Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate // I love using face oils to nourish my skin at night, with this one being my favourite so far. Even though my skin is oily, it is also dehydrated – so my skin really needs something to lock in moisture. This oil gives my skin the moisture it needs throughout the night, so I wake up with plump and radiant skin.
Detox face mask
Lush Mask of Magnaminty (Self-Preserving) // Despite my best efforts to prevent breakouts, sometimes you just can’t stop the inevitable. Most of my breakouts now are hormonal, so around about that time of the month I crack out this purifying face mask. It sucks out excess oil and calms any redness and inflammation from spots. Thanks to the extra honey in the self-preserving formula, your skin feels super clean without feeling dry. My breakouts always look much better within a day of me using it!
Hydrating face mask
Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask // If you’re looking for some serious hydration, this is the product for you. It’s a thick cream, but it sinks into the skin nicely and doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy. You can either leave on for ten minutes and tissue off the excess, or do what I do and leave it on overnight. It’s the only night moisturiser I’ve used in 7 years, it really is incredible stuff. The ultimate Holy Grail skincare product.
Slightly Unnecessary Bonus Item
Clarins Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster // This product isn’t technically a skin care product, but I pretty much couldn’t live without it. It’s a concentrated fake tan in liquid form that you add in to your face moisturiser before applying. With just a couple of drops, the tan develops throughout the day giving you a radiant, glowy complexion. When my skin is behaving, I can skip foundation completely when I use this as it provides a hint of colour and evens out my skin tone.
