The struggle is real when it comes to keeping the blemishes at bay. I have oily, acne-prone skin that has seriously tested my patience at times. Waking up to find yet another gremlin has set up camp smack bang in the middle of my forehead was becoming increasingly frustrating. I’ve tried countless acne products over the years, mostly to no avail. However, through serious trial and error (sore, flakey skin is not pleasant), I have found my spotty skin saviours.
Origins Super Spot Remover // This has been a staple in my skincare routine for years, I absolutely refuse to be without it! It may be a tiny little bottle, but it sure does pack a punch! Despite its size, it also lasts quite a long time as you only dab a little bit on each blemish. If I have a particularly monstrous friend chilling on my face, I’ll apply a dot morning and night. It sits perfectly under moisturiser and makeup, so no need to worry about accentuating the demon any more. In a day or so the redness and swelling has diminished drastically – all without drying the area out!
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (previously named Advanced Retinoid 2%) // This is a wonder product – the kind that you see a noticeable difference in your skin with just one use. I’ve never had that with any other skincare product before. It also keeps getting better the more I use it, my skin looks clearer and brighter with every passing day. Every time I look at my skin in the morning, I’m blown away all over again. This prevents any new spots forming, while reducing the redness and scarring left from previous breakouts. It’s a miracle worker, please try it.
Sunday Riley Martian Toner // Formulated with antibacterial ingredients and to reduce shine and redness, this is a dream for those with oily skin. The thin gel consistency turns to water on application; absorbing into the skin quickly and easily, leaving no weird sticky or tacky feeling behind. This is a great base to apply makeup on top of as it leaves your skin smooth and matte, without being drying or making your skin look dull.
La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo // Another product I always have to hand is this moisturiser-treatment from La Roche Posay. Back in the day, this was a much raved about product and super difficult to get your hands on! The gel is lightweight, yet leaves your skin so smooth and hydrated – the perfect base for makeup. Packed with acne-fighting goodness such as niacinamide, salicylic acid and zinc, it’s super effective at clearing my skin and controlling oil throughout the day.
Clarisonic Mia // This tool is basically an electric toothbrush for your face, and is one that I use every single day in life. It deep cleans your skin (6 times better than with your hands), removing every last bit of oil and makeup. Making sure your skin is as clean as possible is super important in the fight against spots. Exfoliating away dead skin cells also allows your skincare to work better on your skin. Although this provides a thorough clean, it is gentle enough to be used daily – especially when using the sensitive brush head.
A Detoxifying Face Mask // Nothing helps suck out unwanted oils and unclog pores like a good detox face mask. I love the process, sitting there relaxing for ten minutes while the mask goes to work, feeling it working as it dries. I’ve written a whole post about my favourite detoxifying masks, so click *here* to be taken to that post – you know you want to!
